Hung Gar Kung Fu was
developed at the Shaolin (Sil Lum) Temple by a man named
Hung Hei Goon. The word Gar means Clan or Family in
Cantonese, whereas Hung refers to the family name of the
man who invented the system.
According to legend, Master Gee See, a monk of the
Fukien Shaolin Temple, taught Hung the Shaolin Tiger
Style. Hung then added the Crane Style from his wife's
White Crane System and movements from the Dragon, Snake
& Leopard forms to develop a system that is better
balanced in long and short range applications.
The essence of Hung Gar is found in its name. "Hung"
means "to stand tall with integrity." Hung Gar stresses
honesty, directness, iron will-power & righteousness.
Hung Gar is well adapted to close quarter fighting in
small, crowded places and wet and slippery surfaces.
Hung Gar training emphasizes strong stances, iron-hard
blocks, low snapping kicks, ambidexterity, simultaneous
blocking and striking, deceptive hand techniques and
power, all geared for close-range techniques.
The Hung Gar System relates to Yin & Yang, a balance
duality, in that it contains hard pounding techniques
and soft elusive movements. Hung Gar System focuses on
personal physical, mental & spiritual development.
